After Today, Everyone Can Breathe a Sigh of Relief

Press Release

Date: April 17, 2018
Issues: Taxes

House Republican Conference Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) led this morning's House Republican Leadership press conference, celebrating Tax Day. Yes, you read that correctly -- celebrating Tax Day. That's because today is the last time families will file their taxes under the old, outdated, broken tax code.

Chair McMorris Rodgers highlighted the top five things Americans have to look forward to next year with the new tax code: lower tax rates, nearly doubled standard deduction, a doubled Child Tax Credit to help families, a simpler process, and relief from Obamacare.

Earlier this morning, Chair McMorris Rodgers highlighted these positive changes on TV, radio, and in her hometown newspaper. For more on our pro-growth, pro-family tax reform, visit FairandSimple.gop.

Chair McMorris Rodgers's Remarks:
We're missing Whip Steve Scalise this morning. He had a pre-planned surgery. We wish him a speedy recovery.

Today is Tax Day. The AP had their list of the top ten things to know about today. We're here to highlight one that didn't make the list.

For families all across America, it's a day filled with a lot of anxiety and frustration as they're either sorting through the paperwork necessary to file their taxes, or they had to pay extra money to hire an expert or software program to help them with their taxes.

The good news is: after today, everyone can breathe a sigh of relief. Because this is the last time they will file using the outdated code.

Next year, Americans will be able to file their taxes on a simpler form.

Next year, you won't have to tell the IRS whether or not you have health care because we repealed the individual mandate.

Next year, families will be able to take advantage of an expanded child tax credit.

Next year, everyone will see the standard deduction nearly double.

And most importantly, next year, typical families of four earning $73,000 a year will get a tax cut of $2,059.

We are implementing a 21st-century tax code, and that gives everyone a reason to celebrate.

As I've long said, this is about real people. This is about families, moms and dads, small business owners, and people from all walks of life -- they are the faces of tax reform.

Later today, we'll being doing a roundtable highlighting some of those faces of tax reform, including Debra Sawyer, who runs a number of Sport Clips.

Because of tax reform, she's giving 18 of her team members raises, hiring more employees, and building more locations.

This week, we are also advancing legislation to safeguard taxpayer information, protect people from identity theft and fraud, rebuild trust at the IRS. We're taking steps to make sure this agency improves and becomes an agency that puts customer service first.

So, I'm especially pleased today to have the Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, Kevin Brady, with us. He's the one who has led this effort from the beginning to the end to end a broken tax code.
