Hoyer Statement on Ramadan

Statement

House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in recognition of Ramadan, which began at sundown:

"I join in wishing Muslims in our country a "Ramadan Mubarak' as they observe the holy month at a time of uncertainty and difficulty. As we continue to practice social and physical distancing, Americans must look for opportunities to connect with one another, and one of those is to remember that we are all brothers and sisters facing a common challenge together, no matter our different faiths or backgrounds. Though families and communities may not be able to gather around iftar tables this year, I hope that this Ramadan brings a sense of togetherness nonetheless.

"I have been proud to stand with the Muslim-American communities in our country to reject Islamophobia and intolerance and promote peace and understanding. I will continue to work to expand opportunity and promote justice and equality in our country, and I will continue to strongly oppose Trump Administration policies that discriminate against Muslims, including its travel ban targeting primarily Muslim-majority countries. On Ramadan and throughout the year, we stand together to defend the principles of our democracy and to reject hatred and xenophobia in all their forms."
