Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement today as the House of Representatives begins consideration of H.R. 2, the Moving Forward Act, comprehensive legislation to rebuild our nation's infrastructure:

"I'm pleased that the House of Representatives began consideration of the Moving Forward Act today. This important legislation will rebuild our nation's infrastructure to 21st century standards while creating jobs. I'm pleased the bill includes investments to rebuild our highways, bridges, and rail systems; expand affordable, high-speed broadband internet; ensure our communities have access to clean water; expand access to affordable housing; and upgrade our health care infrastructure.

"Additionally, the Moving Forward Act makes important investments in programs that help Marylanders. The bill provides for $1.7 billion in zero-emission bus grants, reauthorizes projects from WMATA and provides a dedicated budget for the WMATA Inspector General, and institutes a grant program to prohibit racial profiling by highway law enforcement officers. The Moving Forward Act also includes funding to help clean up the Chesapeake Bay, reauthorize the EPA Chesapeake Bay Program, and authorize $3 billion in coastal resiliency funds to protect Maryland's coastal economy.

"I look forward to voting on passage of this bill this week. House Democrats are delivering on our pledge to rebuild our nation's infrastructure, which is essential to growing our economy, spurring job creation, and increasing our global competitiveness. I hope my Republican colleagues will support it, and following passage, I will be urging Senate Republicans to take it up."
