Barrasso: The Grizzly Bear is Fully Recovered

Today, U.S. Senator John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) released the following statement after the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) released its completed five-year status review of the grizzly bear in the lower 48 states. The USFWS review recommends keeping the grizzly bear on the list of threatened species under the Endangered Species Act (ESA).

"The science is clear: the grizzly bear is fully recovered in Wyoming. The Biden administration missed an opportunity today to celebrate this success and finally remove the bear from the Endangered Species List," said Barrasso. "The last three presidential administrations - both Republican and Democrat - have determined the grizzly is recovered. Wyoming's good work and sound management practices have proven to be successful. It's time for Wyoming, not Washington, to be in charge of managing the bear."

Barrasso recently cosponsored Senator Cynthia Lummis' (R-Wyo.) Grizzly Bear State Management Act of 2021. The bill removes grizzly bears in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem from the Endangered Species List and shifts management of the grizzlies to wildlife scientists in the states.
