Smucker Supports Legislation Prohibiting IRS Surveillance of Americans' Finances

Statement

Rep. Lloyd Smucker (PA-11), a member of the Committee on Ways & Means, joined his Republican committee colleagues in co-sponsoring legislation to prohibit the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) from requiring financial institutions from reporting in-flows or out-flows of Americans' accounts. The legislation, introduced by Rep. Drew Ferguson (GA-3), known as the Prohibiting IRS Financial Surveillance Act, comes as congressional Democrats are considering proposals to monitor Americans' finances.

"President Biden and congressional Democrats want to be 'Big Brother' and snoop on your personal finances. In true form, the Biden Administration's dangerous proposal is a massive government overreach and will have devastating consequences. The IRS has already leaked taxpayers' information this year, and now they want additional access to your private information? The IRS continues to fail the constituents I represent with excessive delays in processing tax returns. Congress should pass this bill and prevent the IRS from invading tax payers' privacy. I am proud to stand with Rep. Ferguson and my Republican colleagues on the Ways & Means Committee to protect Americans' fundamental freedoms," said Rep. Lloyd Smucker.
