Chairwoman Johnson Applauds Biden Administration on Launch of Heat.gov

Today, the Biden Administration launched Heat.gov through the interagency National Integrated Heat Health Information System (NIHHIS) which is developed by NOAA and the CDC. Extreme heat has caused the greatest number of weather-related deaths since 1992 and was responsible for the highest number of weather fatalities in 2021. Heat-related morbidity and mortality can be significantly prevented with access to extreme heat education, preparation, and measures. By becoming a centralized location for extreme heat and health-related information, this novel website will work to provide resources to the generalized public and various stakeholders.

"I applaud the work of the Biden Administration in bringing forward this new resource to keep Americans safe and informed when it comes to the intensifying threat of extreme heat," said Chairwoman Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX). "Extreme heat is becoming more prevalent throughout the nation and disproportionately impacting low-income and communities of color. Heat.gov is very timely considering the rising temperatures and negative health impacts that we are already experiencing. Just last week, in my home state of Texas, Dallas-Fort Worth broke its third temperature record since June when temperatures hit 109 degrees. High temperatures like this are extremely dangerous and require proactive steps to protect against heat-related illness. This website is another example of the importance of accessible climate services to help communities plan for climate change, save lives, and improve American health."
