LEADER JEFFRIES STATEMENT ON NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH

Statement

Date: Nov. 1, 2023
Location: Washington, D.C.

"During Native American Heritage Month, we rededicate ourselves to honoring Tribal sovereignty, uplifting Native American achievements and upholding our trust and treaty responsibilities to Tribal Nations.

Despite centuries of injustice, persecution and forced assimilation, Native people have persevered and Native culture continues to flourish with each passing generation. We must never forget our nation's painful history and the ways in which we have fallen far short of our solemn responsibilities to Tribal Nations.

In November, we celebrate Native people past, present and future and recognize that Tribal Nations and their people are strong, growing and continue to enrich the quality and character of our nation. We must do all that we can to promote Tribal self-determination and ensure that all Native Americans have every opportunity to thrive in the United States of America."
