Senator John Thune today issued the following statement in support of the Marriage Protection Amendment, which is being debated today on the Senate floor:

"Nothing is more central to the fabric of American society than the family. It is the glue that binds our communities, raises healthy children into successful adults, and preserves the values America was founded on. Yet today, the fabric of our society is under attack by anti-family activists with a narrow agenda aimed at dissolving the definition of marriage that has existed since the birth of civilization.

"The Marriage Protection Amendment sends a strong message to activist judges throughout the country that it is not acceptable to legislate from the bench," Thune said. "Without the Marriage Protection Amendment, there is little stopping activist judges from turning the traditional family structure into a set of rights that can be gained and lost based on special circumstances."
