U.S. Senator Joe Biden Calls for Increased Assistance for Suffering Asian Countries

Responding to the staggering loss of life and widespread destruction caused by Sunday's earthquake and subsequent tsunami in Southern Asia, U.S. Senator Joe Biden (D-DE) announced his support of President Bush's decision to deploy the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier group and other military assets in the relief efforts underway. Senator Biden issued the following statement on the need for bold U.S. leadership in delivering assistance to suffering Asian countries:

"I offer my deepest condolences to the people of Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Thailand, Malaysia, the Maldives, and all other countries affected by Sunday's disaster. Their individual and collective losses are beyond comprehension, tens of thousands of lives and billions of dollars are lost. I applaud the President for his initial commitment of financial resources and military assets to the relief efforts underway. This tragedy requires more. We should lead the world in mobilizing humanitarian and economic assistance, including the use of military assets from the world's major powers. If there ever was a need for a collective international response, that time is now."
